US House votes bill that could potentially ban TikTok in the USA

On Saturday 20 April 2024, the US House of Representants voted a legislation that would ban TikTok in the United States if the popular social media platform’s China-based owner doesn’t sell its stake within a year, but don’t expect the app to go away anytime soon. This bill, adopted by  360-58 vote, now goes to the Senate after negotiations that lengthened the timeline for the company to sell to nine months, with a possible additional three months if a sale is in progress.

The major reason behind the bill is national security related to processing of data, including large amounts of personal data of US citizens by China’s ByteDance, the owner of the TikTok app, and its links with Chinese authorities.

If the bill goes through Senate, the US will be among the first countries to officially completely ban TikTok for all uses. But other countries have already forbidden usage of TikTok and download of the app on professional and business-related devices. Citing security concerns, the European Commission  barred its staff from using TikTok, on February 23rd, 2023, and the same ban was followed by the European Parliament on March 1st, 2023.
