Study: 70% Have Tried Voice Commands, but Only 33% Use Them Daily

In recent years, voice search has emerged as a convenient and useful technology for consumers within their daily lives. However, despite reports that smart speaker ownership is projected to reach 76.5 million in 2020, many consumers are hesitant to utilize voice commands regularly, according to recent data from Social Lens Research.

The study revealed that 70% have utilized voice commands, but only 33% are using them daily. The data also detailed the top reasons that current voice adoption users don’t utilize it more often, including privacy concerns (55%), accuracy/doesn’t work well (36%) and not sure how to use it on certain devices (16%).

Marketers have an opportunity to improve voice search usage by addressing the accuracy issue, as voice commands reportedly only worked 50% of the time or less. Makers of voice technology will also have to focus on improving the overall user experience and easing the process of completing tasks (asking for directions, conducting purchases, etc.) on all devices.

The data comes from a Social Lens Research study, “Voice Commands: Current State October 2018,” n=999. To access the graphic above, click here.
